PIANO ARRANGEMENT
FOR TWELVE HYACINTHS 2000
Upright piano, Hyacinths, steel ballbearings, perspex levers , paper,
graphite
140 x 120 x 45
Twelve steel ball-bearings are carefully balanced upon perspex
levers above the piano.
Twelve Hyacinths grow directly beneath each lever.
As they reach the height of the levers on one side, the ball-bearings
roll off the other end and drop onto the piano keys below.
Notes sound at unpredictable moments over a period of a week.
Each hammer is tipped with a piece of graphite, and so the hammers
which play the notes leave a mark of the event on manuscript paper
behind the strings.
